Roxbury MA (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a Boston courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning hat domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Boston Red Sox, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

If you're a kid growing up these days, sooner or later, someone's going to offer you drugs. "Go ahead, try some of these," they'll say. "They'll make you feel great. Come on, everybody's doing it. Don't you want to be cool?" People have told me all these things and plenty more, but I just tell them to buzz off. I tell them I don't need drugs to get high or be cool: I can do it with alcohol, my anti-drug.

The pushers who hang around the playground behind my school are always going on about the amazing high you get from drugs. But I don't see how it can compare to the pure, natural, 100 percent legal high I get from drinking alcohol. Who needs the artificial escape drugs provide when a good, stiff belt of Jim Beam or José Cuervo can put your head in the clouds while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground?

Sure, at first, drugs may make you feel pretty good. But it's not real. Before long, you're using more and more, even as you're feeling worse and worse. Then, other things will start going wrong for you, too: Your friends won't seem to hang around you anymore, and you'll have new friends who only care about the drugs. Your grades will start to slip. Your memory will go. And your health will fade. All because of drugs.

Don't take that risk: Find something healthy, like alcohol, to take the place of drugs in your life. So, the next time you feel the urge to smoke some marijuana, try reaching for a big bottle of Bacardi instead.

The sneaky thing about drugs is how they make you feel like everything's okay when it's not. Drugs alter the way you perceive things. They change the way you behave and cause you to lose control of yourself. Who wants that? I don't know about you, but I like being in control of my actions. That's why, whenever I feel tempted to wander down the wrong road, I pour myself a nice, stiff drink, thanking my lucky stars that I've got alcohol, my personal anti-drug.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to get "stoned" or "fried"? I'd rather spend my time engaged in more constructive activities, like "wetting my whistle," "liquoring up," or "filling myself with liquid courage." You know, positive things. With alcohol, the glass is always half full. (When it isn't completely full, that is.)

Now, maybe you don't care for alcohol. That's okay. What's not okay, though, is getting hooked on an addictive, controlled substance like pot, cocaine, or heroin. Find a healthy substitute, something you can get really into, something that can be your anti-drug. It could be anything: Learn to play blackjack or the ponies. Explore kleptomania. Have sex with an endless parade of random strangers. Anything that makes you feel good, as long as it isn't drugs.

It's your life, and you have to learn to make your own choices. But choosing drugs? That's no choice at all.

Nothing beats the adrenaline rush that comes from knowing you're drug-free. And, if you're drug-free, you're free, period. I like that feeling, and I like myself. I'm high on life, because I'm high on alcohol, my anti-drug.

Youths calling themselves “Orange Youth Brigade” are busy training in self-defense, explaining they will not permit a reoccurrence of the Gaza or Amona expulsions, especially the brutality directed against youths in Amona.

The directors of the program, including a former IDF self-defense and hand-to-hand combat instructor, explained their training is strictly self-defense. Training includes defending oneself against a threat riding horseback, preparing for mounted police as well.

When asked how they would react to a police effort to remove them from areas of Israel, one director responded that no one will ever forcibly remove them from their homes again and if provoked or attacked, they will defend themselves.

On the Main Line posts a letter about the new Lipa Schmeltzer CD by the Va'ad Hachinuch of Yeshiva Torah V'yiro in Kiryas Joel. The letter finds fault with pernicious "Jezzy-Rock-N-Roll".

Here's a very quick translation:

We'd like to raise awareness and let the respected elders know that we should guard our homes from all kinds of Jewish-Yiddish music tapes.

Especially the new fearful (JEZZY-ROCK-N-ROLL) tape "Keneinahora" [Ed. the title of Schmeltzer's new CD] which is very bad for the spirituality of those who hear it.

Hashem should help save us from all bad influences which come cloaked in many different guises, especially during these holy Chanuka days, during which Hashem saved us from the Hellenists and Greeks, and we should all merit to see righteous and blessed future generations without any bad influences in any fashion.

We should all merit the fullfillment of the blessing of one who lights Chanukah candles will be blessed with sons that are Torah scholars, Amen.

UPDATE: In the first line, it should probably read "Goyishe-Yiddish" instead of "Jewish-Yiddish". I'd like to correct another error too. I translated this as a Lipa Schmeltzer ban, when it really is an anti Steely Dan proclamation. The correct translation of "Keineinahora" is "Aja." In truth, the Va'ad Hachinuch has no problem with secular music; they just hate the whole jazz rock thing. I have it on good authority that they are closet fans of Jeff Back and early Clapton.

Lakewood Sweeps 5,382,299th Annual Stone Age Awards
LAKEWOOD, NEW JERSEY - [TheKnish.com] The stars came out last night to celebrate the best of backwards thinking in the Jewish world. Luminaries such as the Chumradika Rav and the Fachnyukte Rebbetzin were on hand for the proceedings and witnessed an awards coup like none other in the award show's history.

Nominated for 87 out of a possible 124 categories, Lakewood took every award home with them, knocking Bnei Brak down from its reign as leader in Stone Age mentality, a mantle they had held for 33 consecutive years.

A sampling of the awards Lakewood won was "Best Efforts to Marginalize People Who Don't Follow the Yeshiva's Direct Orders", "Best Form of Social Control that Kim Jong-Il Would be Proud of" and "Best Effort to Make Jewish People Indistinquishable from the Amish."

The awards show, originally titled the Ice Age Awards before that era ended, was not telecast, aired, photographed or fed over the Internet because all forms of media are illegal according to Lakewood's interpretation of Jewish law.

Some reporters snuck in to record the event but were banished from the auditorium because the camera straps carried by news cameramen were similar to bra-straps and hence violated the edict of wearing women's clothing.

What they did manage to catch during their brief stay were some performances that included Rebbeim smashing Internet routers, subliminal seminars on effective mind control and a Lakewood Boys Choir rendition of the new smash, "Litvaks are Chasidim Now".

While accepting the award for "Best Halachic Oppression of a Community", Rav Issur Gamur, the Lakewood Rebbe, said, "I am thrilled with this award. It means that the credo I set forth seven years ago - at the start of our reign - still holds true. And that is simply to declare everything new assur and to banish anything that makes women's lives easier. It's tradition!"
